Do Panel Builders and Machine Builders Need to Install Surge Protection for UK Customers?

Surge protection is a big deal. If you get a power surge without it, your manufacturing operation could be seriously affected. But don't worry, we have got you covered!

Why is Surge Protection Important for UK Manufacturing?

When budgets are tight, the extra cost of surge protection might seem unnecessary, but it is really important. (And FYI, surge protection devices are required by the latest electrical wiring regulations!)

Power surges are one thing you don't want to be dealing with at the end of a long work day, or in the middle of the night, or early in the morning... yeah, they can creep up on you at any time. But if one does occur, with surge protection installed, that's one thing off your mind.

But what would happen to your application without protection devices? Essential components can be damaged or blown which could bring production to a standstill, disappointing your customers and costing a lot of money. How long will it take to sort out? Who knows, but without the right surge protection devices, it's a disaster waiting to happen!

What Causes a Power Surge?

Power Surges, or Transient Over Voltages occur for a number of different reasons, with the most visible, and often devastating being a nearby lightning strike - although they actually account for a small percentage of all power surges. The rest are caused by;

Electrical Overload:
When there is an excessive demand for electricity on a circuit, it can lead to a power surge. In a manufacturing company, this often happens when large motors, heavy machinery or conveyor belts are started, placing strain on the system and causing voltage spikes.

System Faults:
Poorly installed or damaged electrical wiring can cause fluctuations in the electrical current, leading to power surges. Faulty wiring may result from wear and tear, pests, or poor initial installation.

Power Supply Issues:
When power is interrupted and then restored there is often a sudden surge of electricity as it returns to the system. Even small surges can damage Automation or Control equipment, and other electronic devices.

It's obvious now that surge protection devices are an essential component to consider and, at LC Automation, we don't want any operation to suffer! We've got a fantastic range of Weidmuller Surge Protection Devices waiting to be installed.

Why You Should Install Surge Protection:

  • Equipment protection - safeguarding your essential components
  • Cost savings - replacing damaged components can be expensive
  • Reduced downtime - replacing damaged components will stop your production
  • Data protection - power surges can be devastating for your stored data
  • Peace of mind - you know your critical equipment is protected
  • Long-term savings - surge protection is relatively low cost
  • Improved system reliability - contributing to your overall reliability
  • Extended lifespan - your critical equipment will last longer

What Type of Surge Protection Do I Need?

It's quite simple. The main difference between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 devices is their location and level of protection.

Type 1 - Surge Protection at the Meter.

Installed at the line-side of the main electrical service entrance. It protects against external transient surges that enter through the building, from power supply issues or lightning strikes.

Type 2 - Surge Protection at the Panel.

The most popular type of surge protection is installed on the load side of your main panel to divert the initial voltage spike to ground and away from the electrical system. It protects your components from residual transient surges from outside, and any internally generated power surges.

Type 3 - Surge Protection at the Device.

Type 3 surge protection is the last line of defence and is designed to protect specific your high-end, high-cost, or very specialist equipment.
