Rugged Red Lion Graphite HMIs Have Global ATEX and IECEx Approvals
Red Lion announce their rugged Graphite HMI series are now certified for use in ATEX and IECEx zone 2/22 environments.
Following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Class I, Division 2 Listed status received last year, Red Lion have announced that their Graphite HMI's can now operate in ATEX and IECEx zone 2/22 environments. These approvals certify that Graphite HMIs are safe for use with industrial control equipment in potentially explosive, hazardous locations around the world.

Red Lion’s touchscreen Graphite HMIs are now able to provide powerful monitoring and control capabilities regardless of operating environment, even locations subject to potentially explosive atmospheres that may result from gas, vapor, mist and/or dust. This enables industrial customers in markets such as oil and gas, flour and grain, mining, chemical, painting and metal processing to benefit from their rugged aluminum construction, wider operating temperatures and high shock/vibration tolerances.
Recently named a “2014 First Team Supplier” in HMI hardware by the readers of Automation World, Graphite HMIs offer a built-in web server that enables users to monitor and control applications via PCs, tablets or smartphones. SMS text-messaging and email alerts provide early warning of process issues, which helps avoid costly downtime.
Ideal For Use in Hazardous Locations
Jeff Thornton of Red Lion Controls, explains; “The addition of ATEX and IECEx certifications to Red Lion’s Graphite HMIs enable us to better serve additional markets that require rugged, sunlight-visible operator panels for use in hazardous locations. Plug-and-play expandability via modular PID control, I/O and communications modules combined with Crimson software eases configuration to simplify integration regardless of environment.”
With their all cast-aluminum construction, the Graphite series have already proved to be a popular, rugged HMI solution. However, ATEX approval and the new communication modules which were recently launched, make them an ideal choice for monitoring and controling systems and processes in even more challenging industrial environments.

Innovative Features:
Available in eight different models ranging from 7” to 15”, the sleek Graphite bezels provide a relatively large display given their overall dimensions. Both the 7” and 10” versions are available as sunlight visible models, which combined with their rugged construction, makes these Graphite models ideal for harsh outdoor environments with operating temperatures ranging from -20° to +60°C.
Named a '2014 First Team Supplier' in HMI hardware by the readers of Automation World, Graphite HMIs offer a built-in web server that enables users to monitor and control applications via PCs, tablets or smartphones. SMS text-messaging and email alerts provide early warning of process issues, which helps avoid costly downtime. In addition, its built-in protocol converter allows programmers to select 13 or more simultaneous protocols from a list of over 250 to seamlessly integrate disparate devices such as PLCs, A.C. inverters, barcode readers and panel meters.
The new HMIs are supported by Red Lion’s award-winning, and free, Crimson 3.0 software. Crimson 3.0 makes it fast and easy to configure protocols, define data tags, set up sophisticated applications and create an attractive user interface. Designed for ease of use, Crimson allows customers to cost-effectively standardise on one HMI for all their machines, regardless of the PLC or A.C. Inverter manufacturer.
Economic Efficiency:
Built with maximum flexibility in mind, the Graphite series enables customers to select the display size and plug-in modules that meet their specific automation requirements. This versatility means that organisations can cost-effectively customise a solution to fit each particular environment. The range of plug-in modules enables customers to easily create a solution for today, with an option to expand to meet changing business requirements. Customers will also notice a reduction in development and commissioning times over traditional systems that use an HMI paired with separate I/O, PLCs and other controllers.
New Communication Plug in Modules:
With the recent introduction of DeviceNet, ProfiBus and HSPA+ cellular plug-in modules, Red Lion added to the existing CAN and J1939 modules to broaden the range of protocols that can be combined into a single solution. When added to Graphite HMI operator panels, these modules remove the need for external communication gateways, saving time and money by simplifying the programming and installation costs.
A Variety of Applications:
From factories to extreme remote locations, Red Lion’s rugged, sleek and flexible Graphite HMIs allow customers to easily connect, monitor and control their process across a diverse range of industries that include manufacturing, oil and gas, and water/wastewater.
