Red Lion PAX2C Now Supports FlexBus™ Technology
Red Lion have announced the integration of FlexBus™ technology to their PAX2C PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller portfolio.
By inserting field-installable FlexCard™ modules, users can now populate PAX2C PID controllers in more than 150 configurations to monitor and control multiple application processes on a single display.
The Red Lion PAX2C is based on an advanced modular platform, to provide an easy upgrade path that enables integrators and panel builders to reduce inventory requirements while increasing application support. The solution is ideal for temperature, flow and pressure control in industries such as packaging, food and beverage, plastic welding and extrusion.
Red Lion PAX2C PID controllers can be used to monitor and control multi-zone PID applications with the use of FlexCard or PAX option card modules. A single PAX2C controller can now take the place of multiple traditional single PID controllers with better control and quicker communication between processes.
“Our PAX2C controllers are designed for end users who want to address a wide range of PID control requirements. By using option cards with the PAX2C, organizations no longer have to maintain an inventory of application-specific controllers. This reduces inventory costs while also allowing organizations to more quickly meet any PID application requirements.”

PAX2C Overview:
- Universal process, thermocouple/RTD, voltage and process inputs
- Programmable dual-line display with units and bar graph
- Field-installable option cards: HCM, Second analog input/PID controller,
4-20 mA or 0-10 V analog output, relay or solid state outputs
- Optional communication cards include RS-232, RS-485,
DeviceNet and PROFIBUS-DP
Red Lion PAX2C PID controllers offer universal inputs, including thermocouples, RTDs, process signals, DC current/voltage and resistance, to provide an all-in-one platform that simplifies integration. Available in 1/8 DIN size, PAX2C controllers work with both FlexCard™ and standard field-installable PAX option cards to seamlessly support changing applications.
Dual-line, tri-color display:
With a dual-line, tri-color display, PAX2C PID controllers offer six digits on the top row, nine digits on the bottom row and a graphical bar chart. The display is comprised of seven zones which may be configured independently to provide visual indication of control and/or alarm status. The easy-to-read display offers 18 mm character height on the top row, with 8.9 mm character height on the bottom row. The front panel is NEMA 4X/IP65 rated for ingress protection.
Universal inputs:
PAX2C controllers feature universal inputs to handle various input signals including temperature, process signals, DC voltage, DC current, and resistance. Additionally, a built-in mini-USB port for programming allows the controller to be programming without changing communication cards.
Field-Installable Option Cards:
The PAX2C platform supports the installation of up to three option cards. This allows users to configure the controller for present applications, while providing an easy upgrade path for the future. In addition to enabling additional communications such as RS-232, RS-485, DeviceNet and PROFIBUS, the plug-in option cards also support dual/quad relays, quad sinking/sourcing, heater current monitor and linear DC outputs.
FlexCard Modules:
The PAX2C platform also supports the use of FlexCard modules that allow a single controller to be populated in more than 150 configurations to monitor and control multiple application processes from a single display. FlexCard modules can be installed in any open PAX2C slot to allow the controllers core capabilities to be easily modified to incorporate a heater current monitor, a second analog input and an additional PID controller. The second PID controller allows the PAX2C to control multiple processes from a single display reducing inventory requirements and saving time, money and installation space.
Performance:
PAX2C controllers offer up to 16 alarms and may be configured to meet a variety of control and alarm requirements. Alarms may be programmed to monitor and/or actuate outputs as well as change display colors. The controller provides a max and min rate reading memory with programmable capture time. The capture time is used to prevent detection of false readings that may occur during start-up or unusual process events. Power input is universal and accommodates 50 to 250 VAC /21.6 to 250 VDC.
