IAI ROBO Pump: Compact, Pneumatic-Free Vacuum Handling for Industrial Automation
IAI’s ROBO Pump provides a simple, fully electric alternative to conventional pneumatic vacuum systems – helping machine builders reduce installation requirements while delivering reliable suction and release control.
As the UK’s only distributor for IAI, LC Automation is pleased to introduce the IAI ROBO Pump – a compact electric vacuum pump designed for automated handling applications where conventional pneumatic equipment can add unnecessary complexity.

A Simpler Alternative to Compressed Air
The ROBO Pump is designed to operate without the air piping, compressor or solenoid valve normally associated with an ejector-based vacuum system. Simply connect the pump to a 24V power supply and it is ready to operate.
Its compact, palm-sized design also means it can be installed close to the robot tip, making it particularly well suited to applications where space is limited. The integrated solenoid valve and pressure sensor make the unit suitable for suctioning lightweight workpieces.
This can make installation considerably more straightforward, with no requirement for:
- Additional compressed-air piping
- Extra compressor capacity
- A separate solenoid valve
The result is a compact vacuum solution that can be integrated directly into an automated system.
Two ROBO Pump Versions for Different Applications
IAI offers the ROBO Pump in two versions:
RP-VPM – Standard type
The standard model releases the workpiece by opening the vacuum line to atmosphere.
RP-VPMV – Air blow type
The air blow version uses positive pressure to release the workpiece, providing quick and thorough release of lightweight workpieces. IAI specifies an air-blow activation time of 0.3 to 10 seconds.
Both models use a diaphragm pump and a 24VDC ±10% power supply. The standard RP-VPM weighs 320g, while the air-blow RP-VPMV weighs 400g.
Designed for Simple Installation
The ROBO Pump has been developed to make integration and day-to-day operation straightforward.
The body incorporates an operation switch, display panel and status LED. The display can show current pressure and alarm information, while threshold values and parameters can be adjusted using the four-way operation switch with centre push button.
For applications requiring additional monitoring and setup functionality, wireless communication is available as an option, allowing communication with compatible IAI teaching tools.
Teaching tools can also provide access to pressure waveforms and maintenance information, helping engineers check operation and diagnose the system.
Built for Continuous Automation
The ROBO Pump is designed for a 100% duty cycle, providing continuous operation capability. The specified generated vacuum pressure is -50kPa or less. Depending on the model, generated flow rate is specified at 1.8L/min or more for the standard version and 1.1L/min or more for the air-blow version.
IAI also specifies a product expected life of 10 million suction/release cycles, making the ROBO Pump a practical option for repetitive automated handling applications.
Connect Directly to Your Control System
The ROBO Pump can be connected directly to a PLC, while an optional RCON-EC connection specification is available for connection over an R-unit to a field network. NPN is the standard I/O specification, with PNP available as an option.
A range of cable lengths, mounting brackets, interface boxes and teaching tools are also available to suit different installation requirements.
An Efficient Approach to Vacuum Handling
By replacing conventional pneumatic vacuum equipment with an electric pump, the ROBO Pump can help simplify machine design and eliminate the need for factory air at the point of use. IAI's literature highlights its low power consumption, with a stated example of an annual electricity cost of US$0.87 under the specified test conditions.
For robot applications involving lightweight components, particularly where a compact solution is required, the ROBO Pump offers a neat way to bring vacuum generation closer to the end of the robot.
