Precise Detection of Parts for Car Body Construction
Compact laser profile sensor provides height profile and 2-D surface image...

At a Glance:
- Reliable and precise detection of the parts, even with
reflective surfaces
- Compact design and flexible mechanical integration for easy
installation in limited spaces
- Simple integration into the programming system
- Output of height profile and 2-D surface image
- Graphical user interface Vision Configurator for convenient
parameterisation as well as image and line visualisation
The Application
In the automotive industry, the accuracy of the fit of parts during body construction is of the most imporance, and there is a lot of demand on it being right. The formed sheets have to meet strict tolerances in three dimensions. The accuracy according to these specifications is checked by spot checks in the press shop. How? Well, a robot gripper takes a formed part from the process and transfers it to the inspection station. The height profile is recorded with the required precision by sensors. From there, the data is transmitted to the companies' quality assurance system, which then compares it with the defined specifications they need to meet.
The Goal
The sensor being used in the inspection has to detect the formed piece with extremely high precision. This detection must not be impaired by any reflective surfaces, as is often the case with metal parts. It's crucial to easily connect the sensor to the overall system. To make it simple to include in the programming, the sensor should have an API and allow full control over settings and output data.
The Solution
The SmartRunner Explorer laser profile sensor from Pepperl & Fuchs accurately records height profiles, while being unaffected by shiny surfaces. It comes with an Ethernet TCP/IP interface to connect to an ICP and a provided API. You have complete control over settings and output data. It can be easily added to a C# development system using a provided example and a user-friendly interface is also included for easy adjustment and analysis of height profiles and 2-D surface images.
Features:
- Height profile output with 960 value pairs in world coordinates
- 2-D image output with 1280 x 960 pixels
- Measuring range: X 40-160 mm/Z 60-350mm or X 40-345 mm/Z 100-700mm
- API for easy integration
- Interfaces: Ethernet TCP/IP, I/O
- Maximum scan rate 30Hz
- Laser class 1, degree of protection (IP67)
The Benefits
The SmartRunner Explorer stands out as the only laser profile sensor in the market to offer both a height profile and the capability to capture a 2-D surface image. It uses built-in LEDs to light up the objects for detection and the captured image can document any defective components and is accessible through the TCP/IP interface. Its compact design and swiveling connector enable installation even in tight spaces. The detection area size, usually reduced in compact designs, is maintained by utilising a mirror - what more can you ask for!
