How Much Energy is Compressed Air Wasting in the UK Aerospace Industry?

You probably know that your compressed air system isn't perfect, but is it wasting £100's, £1000's, or £10,000's every month... who knows???

With high energy prices and supply chain pressure to reduce your carbon footprint, it isn't surprising that Energy Management is a key focus for the aerospace industry. Compressed Air systems are one of the most energy insensitive, and inherently wasteful, parts of any manufacturing business, so monitoring the energy consumption and flow rate to detect inefficiencies can be a great way to reduce your costs.

The carbon Trust says companies should avoid using compressed air wherever possible, but that is easier said than done. Many aerospace companies don't have a viable alternative to compressed air, or don't want to replace existing equipment, even if more energy efficient alternatives are available.

Compressed air systems account for 10% of all industrial energy use,
but the efficiency is 'often poor' due to leaks, inappropriate use, ad hoc
system expansion and poor control.

Air is free - but compressed air is not. Use alternatives where possible.

The SICK FTMg thermal flowmeter measures gas flow and temperature as well as the process pressure, making ir a cost-saving multi-talent. It efficiently measures non-corrosive gases and displays the results on the colour display or exports the data as a process diagram. Where compressed air is important to your processes, this sensor will help to make those processes more efficient.

Continuous Measurement of Your Compressed Air System

The FTMg can help detect even the smallest leaks in your system with 7 days internal data logging. That's good, but the magic really happens when you connect it to a PC or the cloud (via Ethernet or I/O Link). That gives you a much clearer picture and makes your energy consumption more transparent within your business. Allowing you to make more informed buciness decisions.

Features at a Glance:

  • Measurement of Compressed Air Flow rate, Energy Consumption, Pressure and Temperature
  • Easy to use measurement dynamics for monitoring how much energy is being wasted
  • Reduced your energy consumption and increase operational reliability
  • Simple system integration and data availability
  • Continuous data logging to detect leakages and energy consumption over time

Do You Need to Monitor Airflow to Your Robots?

At LC Automation, we are big fans of robots, and they can make a huge difference to your productivity. But at what cost? We know many Aerospace companies rely on robots for Pick and Place applications, End of Arm Tooling and Packaging, Palletisers, and De-palletirers. These applications often use compressed air, and without a viable alternative, that may be the right solution for your application - but how much energy is being wasted? And because Robots don't take a break and often work 24 hours a day, the cost of any wasted energy can really add up.

Get in Touch with LC Automation and Start Saving!

The SICK FTMg sensor, is well suited to the Aerospace Industry and will show you how much air is being wasted, and from where. It can help you to find your leaks, save money, reduce your carbon footprint and become more efficient. If that sounds good, LC Automation and SICK UK can arrange a demo so you can see how good it is for yourself. It's easy, just fill in the form below with a few details and we will be in touch to arrange a convenient time to visit you.
